Plot summary
Henry Maurier's wife Emily is an invalid, and his marriage has not kept him from other women. When Emily dies, Henry marries Doris Mead, a woman much younger than he is, and the match upsets Janet Spence, who is in love with Henry. Emily's death draws suspicion: poison is suggested, other women are named, and suicide is raised as a possibility. Henry is charged with poisoning his wife.
