Plot summary
Mitch Albom is a sports commentator and journalist in Detroit in 1995. Janine, who sings backup and is his girlfriend, feels he never puts her first. One evening, while they are on the phone, Mitch flips through channels and lands on Nightline, where Ted Koppel is interviewing his former professor Morrie Schwartz. Morrie, who taught sociology at Brandeis University in Boston before he retired, discusses his health and says he is dying of ALS. Troubled that he never got to visit his old professor, Mitch reaches out after sixteen years without contact. Morrie loves food, and eating together becomes part of the visits. University office hours fell on Tuesdays, so Mitch now sets that day aside for him. Connie, Morrie's nurse, is his main caretaker at home.

- Mitch Albom doubted the film would be made: "There are no car crashes, no explosions, no intricate terrorist plots. It's just two people talking. What producer in their right mind would want to take that on?"
- According to executive producer Kate Forte, director Mick Jackson was inspired by the German film Run Lola Run to quicken the film's pace.
- The producers believed a straight adaptation of the memoir would be "limp and static", so the story was changed to place more emphasis on Albom, including scenes with his girlfriend and at his workplace.
- The film was produced by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films after Winfrey read the memoir, promoted it on her television show and lobbied for the film rights.
- When it aired, the film brought in a 15.2/22 rating/share and was watched by 22.5 million viewers, ranking as the most watched program that week.
- The film won Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Television Movie, Outstanding Lead Actor for Jack Lemmon and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Hank Azaria, a Directors Guild of America Award for Mick Jackson, and a Writers Guild of America Award and Humanitas Prize for Thomas Rickman.
