Plot summary
In Smurf Village, the Smurfs get ready for a festival that comes with the blue moon. Clumsy Smurf goes out for smurfroot and brings the wizard Gargamel down on the village. As the others scatter, Clumsy runs toward the Forbidden Falls, with Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Grouchy and Gutsy behind him. The blue moon opens a portal that carries them to New York City, and Gargamel and his cat Azrael follow. Clumsy lands in a box that Patrick Winslow carries home to his pregnant wife Grace. The Smurfs reveal themselves, and the Winslows take them in.

- For the film's premiere, the Spanish village of Júzcar was painted entirely blue by twelve local painters who used 4,000 litres of paint, making it the world's first Smurf Village. Residents later voted to keep the color, which brought more than 80,000 tourists to the village.
- Hank Azaria's Gargamel required a prosthetic nose, ears, buck teeth, eyebrows and a wig, and he shaved his head for the part. The first make-up test took three hours, later cut to 90 minutes, and he was transformed over 50 times, spending about 130 hours in the make-up chair.
- Quentin Tarantino was in talks to voice Brainy Smurf, but dropped out, and Fred Armisen voiced the character in the film instead.
- Gargamel's dungeon under Belvedere Castle, which included the "Smurfalator", took three months to build because some parts were hard to come by. The production eventually found the rare parts at garage sales, flea markets, on eBay and Craigslist.
- Four orange tabby cats played Gargamel's cat Azrael, with some scenes created in CGI by Tippett Studio. Animal trainer Larry Madrid used a "rare Burma cat" to make the other cats snarl, because they did not like him.
- The Smurfs was Sony Pictures Animation's highest-grossing film until Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse overtook it in 2023, and was the highest-grossing live-action/animated hybrid of all time until Lilo & Stitch passed it in 2025.
- To play Grouchy Smurf, George Lopez stopped drinking coffee, made sure he had bad breath, and picked the busiest time of day to get to the studio.
