Plot summary

In 1996 Pittsburgh, Jamie Randall is fired from an electronics store after sleeping with his manager's girlfriend, and his brother Josh points him toward work as a pharmaceutical sales representative. After Pfizer training, Jamie calls on doctors to prescribe Zoloft, and his regional manager, Bruce Winston, tells him to win over Dr. Stan Knight, whose switch from Prozac would bring other physicians along. Jamie flirts with the doctor's staff and quietly discards Prozac samples. Knight lets him sit in on an examination of Maggie Murdock, who has early onset Parkinson's. Jamie gets her number from an assistant and takes her out. Saying they want no serious relationship, the two begin having casual sex.

  • Anne Hathaway prepared by returning to the work of Kate Winslet and Penélope Cruz, who she believes have "done nudity with a tremendous amount of sensitivity and dignity", citing Cruz's Abre Los Ojos. Hathaway had final cut over those scenes and used it to remove five seconds.
  • Pfizer and other drug brand names, including Zoloft and Prozac, are repeatedly referred to in the film, which is based partly on Reidy's memoir of his life as a Viagra salesman, but director Edward Zwick denied seeking approval for any of those names.
  • A section of the Mon-Fayette Expressway in suburban Washington County was used for scenes on November 15-16, delaying traffic; a helicopter and 40 to 50 vehicles were brought in, with trailers and tents set up on the campus of Ringgold High School.
  • The film was a posthumous release for the actress Jill Clayburgh, who died on November 5, 2010, and it was dedicated to her memory.
