Plot summary
Green Day plays a concert at Lake Springfield and asks the crowd to care about the environment; the crowd answers with garbage. Lisa and her boyfriend Colin hold a seminar that persuades the town to clean the lake. Grampa has a vision of disaster that only Marge takes seriously. Homer saves a pig from slaughter at Krusty Burger and names him Plopper, keeping him at home despite Marge's warnings. When the silo of the pig's waste overflows, Marge tells Homer to get rid of it. Distracted by a giveaway of free donuts, he dumps it in the lake. A mutated squirrel surfaces, and Russ Cargill of the Environmental Protection Agency lays the crisis before the president, who chooses to seal Springfield under a giant glass dome.

- When 20th Century Fox painted an image of Homer Simpson next to England's ancient Cerne Abbas Giant hill figure to promote the film, local neopagans were so outraged that they performed a "rain magic" ritual hoping to wash the image away.
- To promote the film's DVD release, Fox lit the Empire State Building yellow, the first time in the building's history it had been illuminated for a movie promotion.
- The screenplay went through more than 100 rewrites, and at one stage the whole film was written as a musical before the songs were gradually shortened and the idea was dropped.
- Recording was so demanding that some scenes, including Marge's videotaped message to Homer, were re-recorded more than one hundred times, leaving the voice cast exhausted.
- 7-Eleven spent about $10 million turning a dozen of its stores into real-life Kwik-E-Marts selling Squishees, Buzz Cola and Krusty-O's cereal to promote the film, a stunt that boosted profits at those stores by 30 percent.
