Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In January 2011 a pregnant Kate Hudson was offered the part of Linda Lovelace, with James Franco in talks to play Lovelace's husband Chuck Traynor and the shoot planned to begin after Hudson's child was born. By November that year Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard were in discussions for the two roles instead.
- Demi Moore agreed to a cameo as Gloria Steinem, then dropped out a few weeks later for personal reasons and was replaced by Sarah Jessica Parker. Parker's cameo was ultimately deleted from the film.
- Sarah Jessica Parker's scenes as Gloria Steinem never made the final cut because the time setting for the end of the film was changed from 1984 to 1980, which made the role of Steinem unnecessary.
