Early training
Cartwright left Butler a message on his answering machine, using a Cockney accent. He called back and became her mentor, mailing scripts that she recorded and he critiqued every few weeks for a year.
First role
After meeting the director Gordon Hunt, Cartwright was asked by him to try out for a recurring part as Gloria in Richie Rich. She got the role and went on to work with Hunt on other projects.
Behind the camera
Cartwright ad-libbed Bart's catchphrase "Eat My Shorts" during an original table reading. It referred to her high school days, when the Fairmont West High School marching band changed its chant to "Eat my shorts!"
