Plot summary
Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist at the magazine Millennium, has lost a libel case brought by the businessman Hans-Erik Wennerström, leaving his reputation and savings in ruins. The retired industrialist Henrik Vanger offers him evidence against Wennerström if he will investigate the disappearance of his grandniece Harriet, who vanished from the Vanger family's island estate forty years earlier. Henrik believes the person responsible still sends him a pressed flower on his birthday, as Harriet once did, and Blomkvist moves into a cottage on the island under the cover of writing Henrik's memoir. Lisbeth Salander, an asocial hacker and investigator, is a ward of the state whose guardian, the lawyer Nils Bjurman, controls her money and demands sexual acts in return for access to it. She has compiled a background file on Blomkvist without meeting him.

SPOILER
In one sequence Martin Vanger, played by Stellan Skarsgård, plays Enya's Orinoco Flow before beginning his torture of Mikael Blomkvist. Fincher believed the character would not want to hear the screams without his favorite music, and Daniel Craig picked the song off his own iPod.- Daniel Craig competed with George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Viggo Mortensen and Brad Pitt for Mikael Blomkvist. Schedule conflicts with Cowboys & Aliens and Skyfall made him postpone, and only after MGM's bankruptcy left Skyfall uncertain did Sony and DreamWorks work out a schedule he could accept.
- The title sequence uses a cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song produced by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor with vocals by Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O. Fincher suggested the song, Reznor agreed only at his request, and Led Zeppelin licensed it for the trailer and title sequence alone.
- The India and Vietnam releases were abandoned over censorship concerns, and India's Central Board of Film Certification stated that it had judged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form.
