Plot summary
Moll Huntford, twenty-seven, leads tours on Jersey and lives at home, where her mother treats her as a burden. She helps with her father, who has dementia, and watches her niece. The island is uneasy after a series of unsolved killings of young girls. At her birthday party her sister announces a pregnancy, and Moll, feeling pushed aside, hurts herself and leaves for a nightclub. She meets a man there, and in the morning on the beach he forces himself on her; a poacher with a rifle drives him off. She grows close to Pascal Renouf, the poacher, though her family warns her against him, and Clifford, a detective with his own interest in her, tells her Pascal was once suspected in a killing.
