Plot summary
In 1968 the Ford plant at Dagenham is one of Britain's largest private employers, and fewer than 200 of its workers are women who sew the car seat upholstery in poor conditions. When their jobs are regraded as unskilled and their pay complaint goes unresolved, the machinists vote to walk out. Their foreman, Albert, brings Rita O'Grady and Connie into union negotiations with management, and Rita shows scraps of upholstery to prove the work takes skill. Albert asks Rita to speak for the machinists, who carry protest signs outside the plant, and the newly appointed Employment Secretary, Barbara Castle, follows the dispute. The women's grievance is wider than the regrading: their wages are a fraction of what the men earn.

The real strike on which the film's story is based was a success: it led to the Equal Pay Act 1970.- The film's title song was written specially by David Arnold and Billy Bragg, and it is performed by Sandie Shaw, who had worked at the real Ford Dagenham plant before her singing career.
