Plot summary
Vivienne Bach owns Bach Worldwide, and her son Arthur is a wealthy man who drinks heavily. After a drunken drive through the city, he is arrested and let go the next day. Vivienne then arranges for him to marry Susan Johnson, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, to steady his reputation. Arthur refuses, saying a loveless match with a woman he has nothing in common with is pointless, but learns that his $950 million inheritance depends on the wedding, and agrees. He meets Naomi Quinn, a free-spirited tour guide, around the same time.

- In November 2023, a woman who had been cast as an extra in Arthur sued Warner Bros., accusing Russell Brand of exposing himself and sexually assaulting her in 2010; in 2025 the studio handed outtakes from the film to the court as evidence.
- Russell Brand was announced to play the title role when the remake was first set up in 2008, but the part had originally been offered to Ricky Gervais, who turned it down.
- Arthur's heavy drinking drives the plot, but Russell Brand, a recovering drug addict and alcoholic, said it was not an issue during production: before scenes he would sniff alcohol to remind himself what being drunk was like.
- Arthur was the first feature film directed by Jason Winer, who was best known for directing episodes of the television series Modern Family.
