Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Catherine Morland is fond of Gothic novels and given to imagining. Family friends Mr. and Mrs. Allen take her to Bath for the season, where she dances with Henry Tilney at her first ball and becomes good friends with Isabella Thorpe. Isabella's brother John flirts with her, though she would rather spend time with Henry and his sister Eleanor. Their father, General Tilney, invites her to stay at Northanger Abbey, his country house.

- Writer Andrew Davies added invented dream sequences of Catherine's fantasies that he called 'quite steamy for a young girl,' and was open about his reputation for making Austen adaptations more erotic than the source novels.
- British actress Felicity Jones was chosen to play Catherine, the protagonist and eldest daughter of the Morland family, and received the part upon her first audition, just two weeks after graduating from Oxford University.
- The production shot 21st-century Dublin streets to stand in for 19th-century Bath, partly because Ireland's tax incentives made filming there cheaper than shooting in the real city.
- Screenwriter Andrew Davies had already adapted Northanger Abbey once before, for Weekend Television in 1998. That earlier draft was optioned by Harvey Weinstein for Miramax Films, with other writers adding to it, before the project was dropped.
- Higginsbrook House in County Meath, used as the exterior of the Morland family home here, was later reused as a filming location for the Jane Austen biopic Becoming Jane.
- Made on a £2 million budget, this was only the second time Northanger Abbey had ever been adapted for the screen, the first being a 1987 version.
