Plot summary
Robots from another galaxy have conquered Earth. Humans are confined to their homes and fitted with implants in their necks; robot sentries track movement, and anyone who steps outside without permission is warned to return or destroyed. The robots present themselves as observers of humanity, and they use human proctors to enforce their rule. One is Robin Smythe, who wants Kate Flynn to marry him. Kate still grieves for her husband. Smythe says he is dead, but her son Sean does not believe it. He hides homemade posters in tennis balls and fruit, asking for news of his father. Sean, Nathan, Connor and Alexandra discover that an electrical shock switches off Nathan's implant, and they repeat the procedure on each other so they can go outside untracked. Sean sets out to find his father.
