Freddie Jones
Biography
Freddie Jones was an English actor whose theater, television and film career lasted almost sixty years. Born in Dresden, a suburb of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, he won a drama scholarship and trained at the Rose Bruford college, then worked in repertory in Lincoln. His London debut came in 1962 with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Afore Night Come. The critic Michael Coveney described him as one of the company's most distinctive character actors. He was the first actor to play Sir in Ronald Harwood's The Dresser. He played the ringmaster Bytes in David Lynch's The Elephant Man (1980) and later appeared in Lynch's Dune (1984) and Wild at Heart (1990). His other films included Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) and the 1967 film version of Marat/Sade. On television he played Claudius in The Caesars, winning an award at the 1969 Monte-Carlo Television Festival, and Sandy Thomas in Emmerdale from 2005 to 2018.
