Plot summary
Aboard the Gloria N., which sails from Naples in July 1914, are the friends and admirers of Edmea Tetua, the opera singer whose ashes the voyage will scatter near Erimo, the island where she was born. The journalist Orlando narrates the crossing, moving among the soprano Ildebranda Cuffari, orchestra directors, voice teachers, actors, counts and princesses. The Count of Bassano keeps his cabin as a shrine to Tetua's memory, and a rhinoceros, neglected by the crew, is hauled up from the hold, washed and given fresh hay. On the third day the passengers discover shipwrecked Serbians camped on deck, refugees who fled the assassination at Sarajevo and were brought aboard the previous night. The Grand Duke of Harzock takes them for terrorists.
