Plot summary
Edmond Dantès serves as second mate aboard a French merchant vessel in 1815. When the captain falls ill, Dantès and his friend Fernand Mondego put in at Elba, where Napoleon Bonaparte is exiled. Napoleon asks Dantès to deliver a letter on the mainland and swear to secrecy; Fernand watches the exchange. Home in Marseille, the shipowner Morrell makes Dantès captain ahead of Danglars. Fernand wants Dantès's lover Mercédès, so he and Danglars pass word of the letter to the authorities. Chief magistrate Villefort arrests Dantès, learns that the letter names his own father, Clarion, burns it, and has Dantès imprisoned on the island of Château d'If.
