Plot summary

The inmates of the Charenton Asylum in 1808 make up the cast of a drama staged by the Marquis de Sade, an account of how Jean-Paul Marat died at the hands of Charlotte Corday. Monsieur Coulmier, who directs the hospital, attends the performance with his wife and daughter. He backs Napoleon's government and expects a piece that will defend his own bourgeois and conservative views while condemning the Revolution's more radical phases, which Marat helped lead. The patients have other plans for the evening. They deliver lines he had ordered cut, and they drift away from the script into opinions of their own.
