Thorley Walters
Biography
Born in Teigngrace, Devon, Thorley Walters was an English actor whose career ranged from West End theater to film and television. He appeared in the naval play Escort in 1942 and the musical Her Excellency in 1949. In films he became a familiar face in comedy, including Two-Way Stretch (1960) and Carlton-Browne of the F.O. (1959), and he took parts in three St Trinian's films; his first was Blue Murder at St Trinian's (1957), where he was an army major. From the 1960s he appeared in Hammer horror films such as The Phantom of the Opera (1962), Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966), Frankenstein Created Woman (1967), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969) and Vampire Circus (1972). He also played Doctor Watson in four separate films, among them The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother (1975). On television he was seen in Crown Court, The Avengers, The Lotus Eaters and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

A role that slipped away
Walters was considered for Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army. Producer David Croft offered him the role, but Walters declined, and Arthur Lowe was given the part.
