Biography

Flea, born Michael Peter Balzary in Melbourne, is the bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and one of the group's two remaining original members. He has also played in the supergroups Atoms for Peace, Antemasque, Pigface and Rocket Juice & the Moon, and with acts such as the Circle Jerks, the Mars Volta, Johnny Cash and Tom Waits. In 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted him the second-best bassist of all time, and in 2012 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him along with his Chili Peppers bandmates. Since the mid-1980s he has acted in films, beginning with Suburbia (1984) and later appearing in My Own Private Idaho (1991), The Big Lebowski (1998), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Baby Driver (2017), Boy Erased (2018) and Babylon (2022). He co-founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001 and published a memoir, Acid for the Children, in 2019.

  1. First role

    Flea's first acting role was as the young punk Razzle in Penelope Spheeris's 1984 film Suburbia, which launched a minor acting career that ran alongside his music.

  2. Early training

    Hillel Slovak taught Flea bass, then invited him to play in Anthym. Flea joined but left after several months for Fear, a punk rock outfit.

  3. About the name

    As a teenager, Flea was given the nickname "Flea" because he seemed unable to sit still, and the name stuck with him.

  4. A first

    Flea put out the solo EP Helen Burns on July 19, 2012. It was his first solo release, since his earlier solo songs had appeared only on soundtracks and other projects.

  5. Behind the camera

    Flea wrote the entire lyric to the song "Pea", playing bass and singing it himself, for the Chili Peppers' 1995 album One Hot Minute.
