Plot summary
The camera follows Chet Baker from the 1950s, when he played with Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan and Russ Freeman on the West Coast, to the 1980s, when heroin addiction and upheavals at home sent him to Europe. His children, his ex-wife, women companions and musicians describe his life and career. Vintage photographs taken in 1953, appearances on television and clips from Italian films he made for quick money sit beside the older Baker, detached and indifferent. It begins on the beaches of Santa Monica. Baker's performances from the 1950s and 1960s, along with recordings he made in 1987, carry the music.

- Bruce Weber became interested in Chet Baker as a 16-year-old when he spotted a photograph of the trumpeter on the cover of the 1955 album Chet Baker Sings and Plays in a Pittsburgh record store; the film's title comes from a song on that album.
- Weber spent a million dollars of his own money making Let's Get Lost, shooting only when he had the time and the money and calling it "a very ad hoc film".
- Weber met Chet Baker at a New York City club in the winter of 1986 and talked him into a photo shoot and a film originally meant to run only three minutes; Baker then agreed to a longer film.
- Weber found filming Baker difficult, recalling that because the trumpeter was a junkie who couldn't do things twice, takes sometimes had to start over, though the pair grew to really like him.
