Plot summary
Riley Andersen is an eleven-year-old girl from Minnesota whose mind is run by five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. Joy leads the group and keeps Sadness at a distance, believing she only makes things worse. When Riley's father takes a new job, the family moves to San Francisco. The change unsettles Riley, and on her first day at a new school, Sadness touches a happy memory and turns it sad, making Riley cry in class. Joy tries to remove the new sad core memory, but in the struggle the core memories are knocked loose. Joy, Sadness, and the core memories are pulled out of Headquarters. With only Fear, Anger, and Disgust left in charge, Riley begins to pull away from her parents and friends. Joy and Sadness must find a way back.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Inside Out (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film prompted three separate lawsuits after release, including one from a pediatrician who claimed its personified emotions copied her own pitch for a TV series called The Moodsters.
- The film's invented idea of "core memories," which has little real scientific basis, later became a genuine pop-culture trend, with some parents reportedly trying to deliberately engineer such memories for their children.
- When Docter told Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter that the film was not working after more than two years, and proposed swapping Fear with Sadness as the emotion going on the main journey with Joy, Lasseter agreed.
- The filmmakers originally considered around 27 emotions, including envy, greed, despair and schadenfreude, before narrowing the cast down to just five for simplicity.
- The studio deliberately hid Kind's Bing Bong character from all marketing and posters, at the producers' decision, so his role in the story would come as a genuine surprise to audiences.
- Docter conceived Inside Out in October 2009 after observing changes in his own daughter's personality as she grew older.
