Plot summary
Grant, Biscuit, and Milo are punks from Queens, bored with their lives there. They decide to move to Los Angeles and start driving across the country. In Utah they help an Elvis impersonator called Daredelvis get his trailer unstuck. Grant sees a cowboy on horseback, which he takes for a mirage. While the three camp in the Arizona desert, a gang of rednecks attacks them and the gang's leader, Missoula, kills Milo. Grant and Biscuit escape, and the local sheriffs do not believe their account of what happened.

- Penelope Spheeris had Jon Cryer, Daniel Roebuck and Flea sing "Hava Nagila" while headbanging in a driving scene; the bit inspired the "Bohemian Rhapsody" headbanging scene in her later hit Wayne's World (1992).
- Lee Ving refused to re-enter the building used for the climactic showdown between Grant and Missoula after hearing it contained asbestos, so the sequence was rewritten and edited to show less of his character.
- Jon Cryer and Daniel Roebuck, musical-theater actors new to punk, were mauled by real punks while filming the opening Vandals concert, and a first assistant director's plea to "not hurt the real actors" only made them a bigger target.
- Penelope Spheeris favored Jon Cryer for the lead role of Grant in Dudes, but she also considered Keanu Reeves, and cast Cryer at producer Jaffe's suggestion.
- Daniel Roebuck, cast as Biscuit, had the sides of his head shaved and his mohawk tied in place for the whole shoot, and was so embarrassed by the hairstyle that he had the crew get him a wig to wear on days off.
- Catherine Mary Stewart, who played Jessie, broke her ulna during filming when she stopped her horse abruptly to avoid a parked vehicle and was thrown into it; the injury came near the end of her scenes and did not disrupt the schedule.
- In October 1987 Heron Communications sued the Vista Organization over home video rights to Dudes and nine other Vista films, claiming Vista was reneging on a licensing deal because of a possible merger with Carolco Pictures; Vista denied any such arrangement.
- The scene where Grant, Biscuit and Milo nearly fall off a fire escape was shot in downtown Los Angeles with the actors at ground level, then edited together with shots of stuntmen dangling from a higher level.
