Trailer

Plot summary

Baby, a young man in Atlanta, drives for the robberies Doc arranges, paying off a debt for a car he stole that held Doc's goods. A crash in childhood left him with tinnitus, and he uses music to cover the ringing in his ears. He records conversations and remixes them into tapes, and he looks after Joseph, his deaf foster father. At Bo's Diner he meets Debora, a waitress, and they start dating. On a job where Baby waits in the car, an armed bystander chases the robbers, and Baby has to lose him and the police. With the debt cleared, Baby quits and takes a job delivering pizzas.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Baby Driver (2017)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Ansel Elgort won the lead role of Baby after auditioning several times, on the strength of a taped audition in which he lip-synced and danced to the Commodores' 1977 single "Easy". Edgar Wright was so impressed that the song was added to the film's soundtrack.
  • The mid-film freeway chase had to be shot in a single eight-hour window because the production never had clearance to shut down I-85, so the team rehearsed for just an hour before filming began in the early morning.
  • Wright's 2003 music video for Mint Royale's "Blue Song", made for £25,000, reused an early idea for Baby Driver and became its proof of concept; he was frustrated at having cannibalised an idea he thought had enormous potential.
  • SPOILERFor the parking-garage climax, the shot of Buddy's stolen police car plunging from the top level was staged as a shorter, safer crane drop on another side of the garage to satisfy the owner. DNEG then extended the fall with a set extension built from a lidar scan of the atrium.
  • Jamie Foxx was recommended to Edgar Wright for the sadistic Bats, but Wright doubted he would want a supporting role; Foxx joined because of Quentin Tarantino's support, and modeled Bats on a friend he met at a Los Angeles comedy club.
  • Casting director Francine Maisler hired the deaf actor CJ Jones as Baby's foster father Joseph from a handful of candidates, most of whom were not deaf, though Jones was much younger than the role called for. He went without an on-set interpreter until later in production.
  • Wright could not use some of the hip hop and electronic songs he had written into the script because their samples were not cleared for copyright, so he set about licensing the sampled songs for the soundtrack.
  • The sound team spent eight days recording car noises at Atlanta Motor Speedway, with about six microphones fitted to each vehicle for onboard recordings: one in the airbox, one on the radio dashboard, two near the exhausts and two in the engine compartment.
