Plot summary
Manny Torres works for Kinoscope Studios, and on a night in 1926 he helps move an elephant to a bacchanal at the Bel Air mansion of his employer, Don Wallach. The guests include the cabaret singer Lady Fay Zhu, the trumpeter Sidney Palmer and the silent star Jack Conrad. Manny is taken with Nellie LaRoy, a hedonistic young woman from New Jersey who wants to be a star, and she shares his wish for a place in pictures. When the actress Jane Thornton is carried out of the party, the elephant distracts the crowd, and Nellie is chosen to take her part in a Kinoscope film. Jack hires Manny as his assistant. On set the next day, Nellie impresses, and Manny brings a camera in time for Jack's golden-hour scene.
