George Clinton
Biography
George Clinton is an American bandleader, singer and songwriter whose Parliament-Funkadelic collective developed an eclectic form of funk in the 1970s. Born in Kannapolis, North Carolina, he grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey and formed the doo-wop group the Parliaments as a teenager, later working as a staff songwriter for Motown. Under the names Parliament and Funkadelic, he dominated Black music in the 1970s, with more than 40 R&B hits and three platinum albums. His solo debut, Computer Games, appeared in 1982 and included the R&B chart-topper Atomic Dog. He produced records for Bootsy Collins and for Red Hot Chili Peppers, and his screen work includes Graffiti Bridge (1990), House Party (1990), the Cosmic Slop anthology film he hosted (1994), Good Burger (1997) and the voice of King Quincy in Trolls World Tour (2020). In 1997 he joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2019 the Recording Academy honored him and Parliament-Funkadelic with lifetime achievement awards.

A change of course
During the 1960s, Clinton held a staff songwriter position at Motown. After early commercial struggles and a major hit single, the Parliaments later found success as Parliament and Funkadelic in the 1970s.
Behind the camera
In 1985 the Red Hot Chili Peppers brought in Clinton to produce their album Freaky Styley, since the band members were big fans of his and of funk. Clinton wrote the vocals and lyrics for the title track, which the band had meant to keep as an instrumental.
