Edward James Olmos
Biography
Edward James Olmos, an American actor and director born in East Los Angeles in 1947, began as a rock singer before moving into theater in the late 1960s. His breakthrough came as El Pachuco in the play Zoot Suit, which moved to Broadway, and he earned a Tony Award nomination; he later played the same narrator in the 1981 film version. On television, he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 1985 for playing Lieutenant Martin Castillo on Miami Vice. His performance as Jaime Escalante, a math teacher, in Stand and Deliver brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He appeared as Detective Gaff in Blade Runner (1982) and returned for Blade Runner 2049 (2017), directed and starred in American Me (1992), and played Abraham Quintanilla in Selena (1997). He voiced Chicharrón in Coco (2017) and starred as William Adama on Battlestar Galactica, also directing episodes and the television film The Plan.

A first
Olmos played the real math teacher Jaime Escalante in the film Stand and Deliver. For that role, he became the first American-born Hispanic nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Big break
Olmos landed his breakthrough role as the narrator known as "El Pachuco" in Zoot Suit, a play about the World War II-era Zoot Suit riots in California. After the production reached Broadway, he received a Tony Award nomination.
A role that slipped away
In 1986, while Star Trek: The Next Generation was still in pre-production, Olmos was contacted about playing the captain, but he declined the part.
Behind the camera
Olmos directed four episodes of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica, in which he also starred as Commander William Adama, and directed the television film The Plan based on the show.
