Plot summary
On a Manhattan campus, roommates Derrick Webb, Travis and Cathy Jones, who goes by Jones, take a communications class with Professor Goodwin. Gossip comes up in class, and the three, who enjoy telling lies, decide to start one themselves as a final project and follow where it goes. Jones resents Naomi Preston, a wealthy student she believes once spread a rumor about her. At a party, Derrick sees Naomi kissing her boyfriend, Beau Edson, and sees Beau leave. The three agree to say that Naomi and Beau had sex that night. The story travels quickly, changing as each person repeats it into something more damaging than what the three invented.
