Plot summary
After a year of walking, José Sanchez reaches Los Angeles from Mexico. He looks up El Californio, a distant relative who was born in that city while it still belonged to Mexico. The two farm corn together. José meets María, an American citizen, and marries her. A federal mass roundup deports her to Mexico; their son Chucho is born during her difficult two-year trip back. The family settles in East L.A.
