Plot summary
Joe and Betty run a fish market in Jersey City. Their son Danny has left for Los Angeles to become an actor. The store is the center of Joe's days, and he sees Betty as an obstacle to it. Betty dislikes that he turns down an offer for the business, and feels slighted when he goes to bed early. Nick, a young homeless man, enters their lives. They like him, give him work and put him in Danny's old room. He takes to the trade as Danny never did, and he and Betty are drawn to one another.
