Plot summary

Hispanic students at East Los Angeles high schools face punishments for speaking Spanish, bathrooms locked during lunch, janitorial work as discipline, and administrators steering the less promising away from college. Paula Crisostomo joins classmates who want the treatment to change. Her Chicano teacher Sal Castro inspires them, and her father Panfilo calls the group agitators. Against his opposition, Paula distributes surveys asking students how the schools could improve. Each East LA high school sends two or three representatives to the effort. The group collects the surveys and presents them to the school board.

  • A month after Walkout first aired, 2,500 Colorado students staged a walkout of Denver schools against H.R. 4437, the Sensenbrenner Bill, which would have made being in the US illegally a felony; other student walkout protests in May 2006 were in part inspired by the film.
