Plot summary
Bella is born in an abandoned Denver house shared by a stray dog and feral cats. Animal Control captures the mother and two puppies, and a mother cat adopts and raises Bella. Lucas Ray and his friend Olivia, who come to feed the cats, find the puppy and take her home to his mother, Terri. He keeps feeding the cats, and his calls to city officials about them delay Günter Beckenbauer's demolition plans. Günter reports Bella as a pitbull, a breed Denver bans. Officer Chuck Millits warns that he will impound her on the street, then confiscates her. After Lucas pays a fine and is warned that a second capture means euthanasia, he sends Bella to Olivia's aunt and uncle, who live in Farmington, New Mexico, while the family looks for a home outside Denver. Missing Lucas, she leaves.
