Plot summary
Imelda's husband left her and their daughter Coco for a music career, so she banned music at home and started a shoemaking business. Her great-great-grandson Miguel now lives with Coco and the Riveras and secretly teaches himself guitar from a documentary about Ernesto de la Cruz. On the Day of the Dead, Miguel breaks a frame on the family ofrenda and finds a hidden photograph of his great-great-grandfather, face torn away, holding Ernesto's guitar. Convinced Ernesto is a relative, Miguel tells the family, and his grandmother Elena destroys his guitar. He breaks into Ernesto's mausoleum and takes the guitar, becoming invisible to the living. His skeletal dead relatives carry him to the Land of the Dead, where a curse requires a family blessing before sunrise. There he meets Héctor, a skeleton who once performed with Ernesto.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Coco (2017)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Disney tried to trademark the phrase "Día de los Muertos" for merchandise in 2013, sparking backlash from the Mexican-American community, including cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz's mocking poster of a Godzilla-sized "Muerto Mouse," and a Change.org petition signed by more than 21,000 people calling it cultural appropriation.
- In 2018 Mexican news outlets reported that Disney and Pixar had never disclosed that the character of Mamá Coco was based on a real woman from the Purépecha village of Santa Fe de la Laguna in Quiroga, Michoacán; she said the producers offered her many things but nothing came of it, and only took her picture.
- Miguel was originally going to be voiced by a boy named Emilio Fuentes, but he was replaced during production after his voice deepened from puberty; Fuentes still ended up in the film in a small part, voicing a tourist who hands a dead character a ticket with 30 seconds on it.
- Coco started out as a completely different story: an American child dealing with his mother's death while learning about his Mexican heritage, before the team scrapped that idea and rebuilt the film around a Mexican protagonist instead.
- One discarded version of the story had Miguel's family cursed to burst into song whenever they tried to speak, a workaround the writers considered as a way to sneak music into a story built around a music ban.
- At a cost of $175-200 million, Coco is the first motion picture with a nine-figure budget to feature an all-Latino cast.
- Coco's success in China came as a surprise to box office analysts, who were projecting a gross of $30-40 million; by its second weekend it had become the highest-grossing Pixar release ever in the country, nearly doubling the previous record-holder, Finding Dory.
- On November 15 Coco passed The Avengers to become the highest-grossing film ever released in the Mexican market.
