Plot summary
A teenage boy from a slum is charged with murdering his father. The judge tells the jury that its verdict must be unanimous and that a conviction may carry the death penalty, then sends the twelve men to deliberate. An initial vote finds eleven of them voting guilty. Juror 8, an architect, is the lone holdout. He argues that the case against the boy is circumstantial and that the defendant deserves a real discussion of the evidence. He presses the others on what the two witnesses testified to, and he pulls an identical switchblade from his pocket to show that the knife in evidence is not the rarity the trial made it out to be. He proposes a secret ballot: if all twelve still vote guilty, he will agree, but a single vote for acquittal will keep the jury talking.

- Ving Rhames won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for Don King: Only in America, then summoned Jack Lemmon to the stage and gifted him the trophy, saying Lemmon deserved it more. Rhames refused to take it back when Lemmon tried to return it, so Lemmon kept the Golden Globe without officially winning it.
