Plot summary
Meredith Morton travels with her boyfriend Everett Stone to his family home in New England for the Christmas holiday. His parents, Kelly and Sybil, and his younger siblings Ben, Susannah, Thad and Amy, are outspoken and close. Everett intends to marry Meredith. She is outwardly put-together but self-conscious, and the family's welcome is cool, with Sybil and Amy treating her as a poor match. Kelly is gracious toward her, and Ben alone seems to like her. After a series of awkward moments she moves to a local inn and asks her sister Julie to come for support, and the Stones take to Julie at once.

- Writer-director Thomas Bezucha based the story on his own family: "My sister [was] dating someone, and the family didn't think it was a great match." He wrote the screenplay under the working title F---ing Hate Her, pitching it the same week Meet the Parents was released.
- In a November 2025 interview with CNN, Bezucha revealed he had been working on a sequel after the death of Diane Keaton; in September 2026 the follow-up, titled The Families Stone, was announced at Searchlight Pictures, with Bezucha returning as writer and director alongside the original cast.
- Sarah Jessica Parker was cast amid the final season of Sex and the City and, having struggled to find a role that set her apart from Carrie Bradshaw, called Meredith a breakaway: "She is... controlling, rigid and tightly wound."
