Plot summary
Sixteen-year-old Lucy Diamond lives in a small town where she keeps the house tidy and is allowed to drive her mother Lainee's car even though she is too young for a license. Her father Chuck works in Canada, coming home about three times a year, and he expects to be the family's provider; Lainee keeps her job hidden from him when he visits. Lucy's best friend is Kenny Crauder, who is picked on by Scott Booker. Lucy kisses Scott so that he will leave Kenny alone, and when Scott calls her a bad kisser, Kenny suggests she could decide the memory went differently. She asks Kenny to kiss her, and the two start sleeping together.
