Plot summary
Bobby Cooper is driving to Las Vegas to repay a debt owed to a gangster named Mr. Arkady when his radiator hose bursts three miles outside Superior, Arizona. At Harlin's Garage, Darrell says the repair will take time and asks about Bobby's bandaged left hand, so Bobby locks his handgun in the trunk and walks into town. He helps Grace McKenna carry her new drapes home, and she invites him to shower; her much older husband, Jake McKenna, interrupts them and assaults him. On the walk back to Superior, Jake picks Bobby up and asks whether he would kill Grace for money. Bobby dismisses the proposal.

- U Turn was shot largely on reversal film stock, Kodak 5239, to give the hostile environment an extra harsh look; the filmmakers ended up using it for 75 percent of the film after taking advice from Spike Lee and Malik Hassan Sayeed, who had used it on Clockers.
- Joaquin Phoenix came up with the look of his U Turn character Toby N. Tucker himself, shaving the initials "TNT" into the back of his head, a nod to small-town fads that outlast the years they belong to.
