Plot summary
Two years after Gillian Lewis fell from a yacht's mast on her birthday and died, her husband David has turned the family's summer cottage on Nantucket into a permanent home. He spends much of his time on the beach, talking with her spirit, and their teenage daughter Rachel is left largely to herself. On the second anniversary of the death, Gillian's sister Esther Wheeler arrives for the weekend with her husband Paul, and she brings her friend Kevin Dollof along, hoping David will take an interest in her. David pays Kevin no attention and goes ahead with the formal dinner and the beach ritual he keeps for Gillian's birthday.

- The Nantucket summer the film is set in was pieced together from three states: Nantucket itself and Wilmington, North Carolina, with beach scenes in Long Beach, California and the sailing accident shot off Marina del Rey. The mismatch was obvious enough that New York Times critic Janet Maslin called it out in her review.
