Plot summary
Claudia Larson, a single mother in Chicago, has just lost her job, and her teenage daughter Kitt has decided to spend Thanksgiving with her boyfriend instead of with her. Claudia flies to Baltimore, where her parents, Adele and Henry, are hosting the holiday. Her brother Tommy, whom she had thought would not come, shows up with Leo Fish, a business partner of his whom she takes to be his new boyfriend, and she worries about what has happened between Tommy and Jack, his longtime boyfriend. Adele's sister Glady is there, along with Claudia's sister Joanne, Joanne's husband Walter and their children, and Russell Terziak, an old friend of Claudia's whom Adele keeps trying to pair with her.

- Filming the Thanksgiving dinner scene took more than ten days and consumed 64 turkeys, 44 pies, 35 pounds of stuffing, 30 pounds of sweet potatoes, 20 pounds of mashed potatoes, 18 bags of mini-marshmallows, and 50 gallons of juice standing in for wine.
- Executive producer Stuart Kleinman sent Jodie Foster the screenplay with a note that said, “It's a complete mess and I love it.” Foster agreed, and made it her second film as director, after Little Man Tate.
- Director Jodie Foster allowed Robert Downey Jr. to improvise on set, which got him excited about making films again after a period when he had become disillusioned with acting.
