Plot summary
Placid Lake is seventeen and has spent his life in the suburbs with Doug and Sylvia, his free-loving and neurotic parents, and their hippie habits. Finishing high school leaves him in an existential crisis, and he sets out to remake himself as an ordinary, productive citizen. He spends a few weeks working through self-help books, has his hair cut, buys a bespoke suit, and takes a job at an insurance agency. Gemma Taylor, his clever friend, argues against his turn to economic rationalism, and his parents make their disapproval plain, but Placid pays no attention. He stays fixed on being acceptable, though insecurity and neurosis leave him unsure how to talk, think or dress.
