Plot summary
Years after the destruction of Cyberdyne Systems, John Connor lives as a nomad, staying clear of anything Skynet can trace, convinced the artificial intelligence is still hunting him even though the foretold war never arrived in 1997. Skynet sends the T-X, an advanced Terminator armed with a liquid metal exterior and the ability to control other machines, back to 2003 to kill John and the allies he will need, among them Kate Brewster, who works at an animal hospital. Since John has kept off the grid, the T-X goes after Kate to draw him out. The Resistance answers by sending a reprogrammed T-850 Terminator to guard them. Kate's father, Lieutenant General Robert Brewster, oversees Skynet's development at Cyber Research Systems, under pressure to activate it.

- Schwarzenegger received a record salary of $29.25 million plus 20 percent of the profits, although he agreed to defer part of it to prevent the set being relocated from Los Angeles to Vancouver, British Columbia.
- Mostow originally wanted Claire Danes for the role of Kate Brewster, but that did not work out and Sophia Bush was cast instead. During filming Mostow felt Bush seemed too youthful; he tried everything to make her look older, but the camera doesn't lie, so he had to replace her.
- Edward Furlong signed on in August 2000 to reprise his role as John Connor, but in December 2001 casting began for a replacement: Warner Bros. dropped him over a substance abuse problem, concerned that his publicized drug problems could jeopardize the project.
- James Cameron had directed and co-written the previous Terminator films, yet the rights were held by Carolco Pictures and by his ex-wife, Terminator 2 executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, 50 percent each; Cameron had sold his stake to Hurd for $1 before directing The Terminator in 1984.
- Approximately 10,000 women auditioned for the role of the T-X, and Schwarzenegger originally wanted the wrestling star Chyna to portray her.
- The last scene shot was an opening one in which the T-X arrives naked on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Mostow said filming it discreetly was a challenge given the street's popularity with tourists; the filmmakers waited five months for clearance and had to close the street.
