Plot summary
Alex and Greg Wheeler live in Brooklyn with their four-year-old son Jake, who loves dresses, fairy tales and princesses. With the city's private kindergarten admissions cycle approaching, they want Jake to stand out, and Judy Lawson, the director of his preschool, tells them his gender expansive play could help. The competition asks parents to highlight what is most unique about a child, which pushes Alex and Greg to look at Jake's interests in a new way. Alex is newly pregnant and Greg works as a social worker; their friend Amal is raising her son Sanjay on her own. Jake begins acting out at preschool, and the couple has to find a way to support him.
