Plot summary
Winter is over, and Joe Bass is bound for town with the hides he trapped, meaning to sell them. A Kiowa band under Two Crows stops him and takes the furs, handing him instead Joseph Lee, a well-educated house slave the Kiowa had seized from Comanches. Lee knows nothing of the wilderness, and after one failed attempt to get away he follows along. Bass and Lee watch the Kiowa being ambushed by scalphunters under Jim Howie, who take the furs. The scalphunters collect the bounty the government pays for Native American scalps. Bass trails them, meaning to trick his furs back from a larger group.
