Plot summary
Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy wants a reward for proving that the privateer Henry Morgan deals in piracy. He signs on as surgeon on the ship of Charles Bellamy, a pirate he believes works with Morgan. On board, he and a fellow spy, Briggs, learn that Edward Teach, called Blackbeard, has killed Bellamy and now commands the vessel. Blackbeard's passengers include Edwina Mansfield, the daughter of a pirate, who had agreed to marry Bellamy; Blackbeard knows Morgan loves her and expects him to come after her. Blackbeard orders Maynard to cut a bullet out of his neck and sets Gilly to watch him. Gilly passes Maynard a note begging him to kill Blackbeard, and Maynard refuses. Maynard slips into Blackbeard's quarters looking for Bellamy's logbook, which he hopes will prove Bellamy supplied Morgan with stolen goods.
