Rory Calhoun
Biography
Rory Calhoun, born in Los Angeles in 1922, was an American actor who starred in many Westerns in the 1950s and 1960s. A screen test at 20th Century Fox led to early roles, including the Laurel and Hardy comedy The Bullfighters (1945). Henry Willson then signed him to David O. Selznick's company, where he was renamed Rory Calhoun, and he appeared in The Red House (1947), Miraculous Journey (1948) and Massacre River (1949). After signing a seven-year contract with Fox in 1950, he was promoted to co-star in Way of a Gaucho (1952) and took Western leads in The Silver Whip (1953) and Apache Territory (1958). How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and River of No Return (1954) were big hits. He formed Rorvic Productions in 1957 and was co-producer and star of the television series The Texan until 1960. Later cult films included Night of the Lepus (1972), Motel Hell (1980), Angel (1984) and Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988).

A role that slipped away
Rory Calhoun was considered for the lead role of James West in the 1965-1969 CBS series The Wild Wild West, but after his screen test failed to impress the producers, Robert Conrad was chosen instead.
About the name
Calhoun said Selznick chose his first name, Rory, since he was a Leo and lions roar. For a surname, Selznick suggested Donahue, Calhoun or Callahan, and Calhoun picked Calhoun.

In 1958, Desi Arnaz, a studio boss, recommended Calhoun, who then co-produced and starred in The Texan, a television series that aired on Monday evenings until 1960.

Calhoun wrote the story for Shotgun, a 1955 Allied Artists film. He wanted the starring role, but Universal refused to lend him to the production.
