Plot summary
In a tavern on the Spanish Main, waiters Rocky Stonebridge and Oliver Johnson run errands for Lady Jane, who wants her love note delivered to the singer Bruce Martingale. The notorious Captain Kidd is dining there with the pirate Captain Bonney, who demands her share of the treasure he took in her waters. Kidd says the hoard lies hidden on Skull Island and that only his map shows where. Oliver then hands Captain Kidd the wrong paper, and Rocky bargains with Kidd for passage and a share of the treasure in return for the map. Kidd agrees, and the ship sails.

- When Universal Pictures refused to spend the extra money to shoot the film in color, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello produced it themselves through Abbott's Woodley Productions, using a contract clause that let them make one independent film a year.
- Charles Laughton, then at a low point in his career, was paid only $25,000 to play the pirate Captain Kidd.
- The film was only the second ever shot in SuperCinecolor, a three-color version of Cinecolor that used an Eastmancolor negative, because Cinecolor offered no three-color origination of its own.
- The handcuff routine Bud Abbott and Lou Costello first performed in Who Done It? (1942) was recycled here, with Charles Laughton's Captain Kidd demonstrating the cuffs by latching them on himself.
