Plot summary
At Appomattox, with the Confederate surrender under way, O'Meara learns the war is ending and turns his rifle on Grant; the doctor treating Lieutenant Driscoll, the Union officer he had shot, stops him and hands him the bullet as a keepsake. O'Meara goes home to Virginia, refuses his mother's wish that he settle down, declares himself a man without a country, and travels west hoping to fight alongside the Sioux. In unfamiliar country he falls in with Walking Coyote, an old Oglala scout who is returning to his people to die and who teaches him the language and the customs. Warriors under Crazy Wolf seize the pair, and Walking Coyote claims the run of the arrow, a rite that may spare them if they survive a run through flying arrows.

- Rod Steiger badly sprained his ankle just before the "run of the arrow" scene was to be shot and could not walk, so Samuel Fuller had an Indian extra run in his place. Fuller kept the camera on the runners' feet, which critics at the time praised.
- After Dances With Wolves came out in 1990, critics including Jeremy Arnold of the Los Angeles Times and Angela Aleiss, writing for the Library of Congress, noted that its plot was almost identical to Run of the Arrow's.
- Sara Montiel does not use her own voice in Run of the Arrow: her voice is dubbed by Angie Dickinson.
- The film's Sioux-territory scenes were shot at Snow Canyon and Pine Valley Lake in St. George, Utah, a location far from actual Sioux territory.
