Plot summary
Wagon Mound is a town emptied of everyone but the McDade family. Four outlaw brothers came home with the loot from a robbery, were trapped in a burning barn, and only three bodies were found. Which brother survived and where the hundred thousand dollars in gold sits, nobody knows, and strangers who come looking are shot at. Dan Kehoe, chased by a posse, approaches the family pretending to be a fugitive and takes a bullet for it. Ma McDade and the four wives bandage him and let him stay. Ma rules the house: one of the women may still be married, so all must act married, and Kehoe is told to leave in the morning. He offers Ma a story about a man he met in jail.
