Plot summary
Martin Penalosa is a young gaucho in Argentina in 1875, one of the cattlemen of the South American plains. He kills a man in a duel, and his prison sentence is changed to service in the army. He serves under the tough Major Salinas and tires of military life, then deserts. Taking the name Valverde, he leads a band of gauchos who resist the railroad agents moving into the Pampas.

- Way of a Gaucho was one of a wave of "runaway productions" made abroad to use up Hollywood money frozen by currency controls; 20th Century Fox had built up earnings in Argentina during World War II that it could not spend outside the country.
- The shoot was troubled by a tense relationship with Juan Perón's government in Argentina; Philip Dunne said Perón's followers had made the gaucho a national hero, and the script was closely monitored by the Minister of Information, Raul Apold.
- The studio wanted Tyrone Power to star, but he disliked being continually cast in period films; after he refused to star in Lydia Bailey, Fox suspended him and he missed out on Way of a Gaucho.
- Jean Peters was cast as the female lead but asked to be excused from the film because of ill health, and was replaced by Gene Tierney.
- Rory Calhoun got the lead, and Fox head Darryl Zanuck said he had had his eye on the actor for several years, though Calhoun was then under contract to another studio.
- Making a Gaucho film in Argentina for a major United States studio prompted local studios to make a Western in Argentina for the first time.
