Plot summary
In England, Professor George Challenger interrupts a lecture at the Natural History Museum given by his rival, Professor Leo Summerlee, and argues for an expedition to the home of the pterosaur he shot in the Amazon. The scientific community dismisses him. Two volunteers come forward: Lord John Roxton, a big game hunter, and Edward Malone, a reporter whose love, Gladys, will marry only a man of adventure. The skeptical Summerlee joins too. Aboard ship, Challenger shows the party a map drawn by Father Luis Mendoz that points to a remote Brazilian plateau where he met dinosaurs on an earlier expedition and took them for dragons. At a mission in the Amazon they meet Agnes, who offers to join as a translator, and her uncle, the Reverend Theo Kerr, who condemns Darwin's theory of evolution.
