Plot summary
Jack Moony is a Los Angeles police sergeant whose habits have worn down his health, and who nurses a grudge against Napoleon Stone, the lawyer dating his former girlfriend, Crystal Gerrity. Stone dies, and Moony, after a heart attack, receives Stone's heart in the transplant that saves him. Back on his feet, Moony finds Stone's ghost beside him, visible and audible to no one else, insisting he was murdered. The ghost pushes Moony to find out who killed him. Moony, whose racism fed his dislike of Stone, has to pursue the inquiry while working with his partner, Harry Zara, who cannot see the ghost either.

- Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Brian Dennehy and Dennis Hopper were considered to play Jack Moony in Heart Condition before the part went to Bob Hoskins.
